Understanding Beach Facing: Why Coastal Orientation Changes Your Surf

A beach's facing is the compass direction it looks out to sea, and it decides everything: which swell reaches it and which wind is offshore. Portugal's coastline is 1,794 km long and splits into two orientations — west-facing and south-facing (Wikipedia — Geography of Portugal). A west-facing beach eats North Atlantic swell but gets blown out by the summer nortada. A south-facing bay hides from both. Same day, opposite reading.

Here's the short version before I earn it:

  • Facing sets swell exposure. A beach only takes swell from the arc of directions it faces, plus a bit that wraps in.
  • Facing sets offshore wind. The wind that grooms the wave is the one blowing from land to sea — the exact opposite of the facing.
  • West and south beaches want opposite conditions. A west swell that lights up Tonel barely registers at a south-facing bay a mile away.
  • The nortada is the seasonal wildcard. From June to September it's onshore for almost every west-facing beach in the country.
  • Multi-facing headlands cheat the system. Peniche and Sagres face several ways at once, so there's usually one side working.

What does "beach facing" actually mean?

Stand at the waterline and look straight out to sea. The compass bearing you're looking along is the facing. Meco facing 283° means it looks out to the west-northwest. That number does two jobs at once.

First, swell. A beach receives swell arriving from roughly the arc it faces — a window of maybe 80 degrees, give or take what refracts around a headland. Swell from behind the beach doesn't magically appear.

Second, wind. Offshore wind — the clean, grooming wind — blows out along the facing, meaning it comes from the opposite bearing. A beach facing 283° wants wind from around 103°, roughly east-southeast. We measure each spot's facing off OpenStreetMap geometry rather than guessing it, because a 20-degree error changes which winds we call offshore.

Why does Portugal's coast read as two different coasts?

Because it physically is two. Portugal is bordered on the west and south by the North Atlantic, with the southeast opening onto the Gulf of Cadiz (Wikipedia — Geography of Portugal). Those two orientations behave nothing alike.

The northwest is remarkably uniform. A University of Porto study found the coastline holds "a very consistent NNW-SSE orientation from Cape Silleiro in Galicia to Espinho," about 122 km of it (University of Porto — CEGOT, 2020). A straight, west-tilted wall like that faces the open Atlantic head-on. Whatever the North Atlantic throws, this coast catches.

The south is the opposite. The Algarve's south-facing beaches sit in the lee of the whole peninsula. They don't see raw NW swell at all — which is why they're often flat when Ericeira is maxing.

How does swell wrap around Sagres to reach south-facing beaches?

By bending. Swell refracts around a headland, losing size but changing direction as it does. Sagres is the pivot point for the whole south coast.

Lonely Planet describes it well: in winter, strong North Atlantic swells "bend around the Sagres headland, bringing makeable waves to south-facing beaches such as Zavial and Faro," while simultaneously delivering "huge overheads to west-facing beaches" (Lonely Planet). Praia do Zavial is a south-facing bay where a NW wind turns offshore, giving right-hand walls — but only on solid W–SW swell.

So a south-facing beach isn't dead in winter. It just needs a bigger, more westerly swell to feed it the leftovers after the headland has taken its cut. That's the shadow factor we author per spot.

Which wind is offshore where? A worked example at Sagres

Sagres is the cleanest teaching case in the country because two of its beaches face different ways within walking distance.

Read the last column. A north wind is offshore at Mareta and roughly cross-shore at Tonel. The same breeze grooms one beach and chops the other. This is why a single regional wind forecast tells you almost nothing until you tie it to a facing. Why does the nortada ruin west-facing beaches in summer?

Because it blows straight onshore into them for months. The nortada is a summer wind along the west coast of Iberia from northerly directions, mainly June to September, with a main direction of north-northwest (Wikipedia — Nortada). It's driven by a thermal low over Iberia and the Azores High out over the Atlantic.

For a west or northwest-facing beach, a NNW wind is onshore. It arrives clean at dawn and turns the surface to chop by early afternoon. The same wind also drives upwelling that keeps west-coast water between 17°C and 20°C even in August (The Portugal News, July 15, 2026) — bring the wetsuit you'd bring in spring.

The move in nortada season is early, or find a beach the wind can't reach.

How do multi-facing headlands beat the wind?

By facing several directions at once, so one side is always sheltered. This is the whole appeal of Peniche.

Baleal, on the Peniche peninsula, has beaches facing south, west, and north, "which means there's almost always an offshore wind and always a place you can go to seek out smaller waves" (The Surf Atlas). When the nortada is hammering the west side, the south side is tucked in behind the land and offshore. You just walk around the headland.

Ericeira, further south and west-facing, is the only World Surfing Reserve in Europe, with seven world-class breaks in 4 km of coast — great swell exposure, but it doesn't have Peniche's escape hatch when the wind swings onshore.

Reading one forecast three ways

I'm in the water most days — surfing, swimming distance, sometimes just fishing off structure with a flask in February. Facing changes what each of us wants from the same day, and the same water reads three ways depending on who's looking at it.

What does a surfer want from a facing?

A surfer wants a facing that opens onto the swell with an offshore wind.

What does a swimmer want?

A swimmer wants the opposite: a beach tucked away from swell and wind entirely, which is why Peel Watch scores swimming on a separate calmness reading.

What does a fisherman care about?

A fisherman mostly wants the tide state and the structure, and cares less about the swell window. Same water, three readings. Facing is the hinge all three turn on.

A note on limits: forecast drift is about ±0.5 on the ten-point scale, so treat a 0.2 gap between two spots as noise, not a decision. And where a spot hasn't been reviewed by a human it carries a provisional badge and we cap what we'll claim about it.
