South side of the Baleal tombolo — the Nortada shelter. When the whole coast is blown out by N wind, this is where everyone surfs. Smaller, cleaner, friendlier. Name corrected 2026-08-29: was "Baleal Sul (Cova de Alfarroba side)", which conflated two separate beaches — Baleal Sul, Cova de Alfarroba and Gamboa are three distinct Blue Flag beaches and separate APA bathing waters (PTCF8L vs PTCE2C), Cova de Alfarroba sitting mid-bay about 2.4 km south. Hazards: a rip AT THE ROCKS of the island end is NOT established — three independent source classes (municipal, maritime authority, academic) returned nothing, the one surf-media claim is a template sentence that appears verbatim on unrelated beaches worldwide, and the one officially-attributed agueiro rescue nearby (AMN, 11 Aug 2024) was at Cova de Alfarroba, 2.4 km away. But rip CHANNELS on this beach are supported: Silveira et al. 2013, J. Coastal Research SI65:1069-1074, surveyed this 4 km embayment and classify it as low tide transverse bar and rip as the MODAL state, i.e. rip channels are its normal configuration rather than a storm exception. That is a beach-wide, sand-controlled, migratory feature, not a rip pinned to the headland. Note also that APA bathing profiles are water-QUALITY instruments and never record rips anywhere — the profile for Guincho, one of Portugal's most notorious rip beaches, is equally silent — so their silence is not evidence of absence and must not be cited as such.

Hazards rip channels at low tide · surf-school crowds · half-submerged rock off the main access · rocks off the island end
